A FEMALE street kid aged between 12 and 14 was yesterday morning repeatedly defiled by eight of her male colleagues at the former Astra Cinema premises on Matuka Avenue in Kitwe after she was allegedly intoxicated with a substance commonly known Jenkem.
The ugly scene happened in full view of passersby who included some Journalists from Times of Zambia who were watching from the side window of their offices on the first floor of the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) offices in the city centre.
Efforts to apprehend the eight boys failed after they managed to jump out but one of the suspects was apprehended by police officers from Central police station who arrived at the scene after members of public raised alarm.
The girl, who was struggling to walk and looked confused, narrated that she was drugged with jenkem before they took turns in defiling her.
Eye-witnesses said it was traumatising to watch the girl pulled to the ground and boys taking turns to rape her.
And when contacted for a comment, Kitwe Town Clerk Mbulo Seke said it was regrettable that such an ugly incident could happen in Kitwe, but that his office would summon the owner of the piece of land.
“Well, I must say that I got that information from the Journalist from the Times of Zambia. If that’s what happened, then, it is unfortunate. We will summon the owner of the piece of land,” Mr Seke said.
The former Astra Cinema building has, for a long time, been an eye sore in the middle of the city centre where it was standing abandon and has been used as a toilet by street kids and even for other filthy activities.
The buiilding recently given to Rita Investments of Kitwe after a court ruling, but the developer had taken long to start developing the place, a situation which has made it continue to be used for various immoral activities by the rising number of street children.
And some residents talked to, told the Sun that government should address the increased number of street kids in Kitwe which was a time bomb.
