Kitwe flood victims abandon transit centre

FLOOD victims in Kitwe, who have been temporarily been accommodated at Buchi Hotel, have started leaving the transit centre citing poor sanitation and lack of proper care.

The flood victims have for some time now been crying to Government and the Kitwe City Council for quick resettlement, especially after the outbreak of COVID-19 in March this year.

Over 500 flood victims from Bulangililo, Musonda, Mwaiseni, Mufuchani and areas around Kafue River were accommodated at Buchi Hotel and Buchi Hall for over six months, but have started abandoning the place fearing COVID-19 infection.

They have also complained of poor sanitation.

“Our friends have started leaving because of the way of life we are subjected to here. We now feel we do not have anyone to turn to because we are not getting any promising response,” said one of the victims Musenge Musonda.

Mr Musonda said that the victims had been waiting for an update for some months now but to no avail.

He said that the people had started going back to their settlement to rebuild the houses that collapse after the Kafue River burst its banks.

Another victim, Mable Mulenga, complained that it was difficult for them to live with children at the transit centre that was overcrowded.

“We can only ask for Government to expedite their procedure of moving us before we all go back to our old place.

“We are getting worried day by day especially when we do not get any updates from the relevant authorities and we feel we are forgotten,” she said.
