POLICE in Nakonde have arrested three brothers for attempting to murder their uncle whom the accused of practicing witchcraft, Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Joel Njase has confirmed.
Mr Njase named the suspects as Friday Simbule 35 Aaron Simbule, 22 and Kendrick Simbule 43 all of Mafwa village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area.
Mr Njase said the incident occurred on January 15 at around 11:30 hours when the trio attempted to shot their uncle Paul Simbule who was in company of his son on their way from the field.
“The brief facts are that, their uncle was coming from his field in the company of his son Webby Simbule when they were ambushed on the way by male Friday Simbule who was armed with a suspected muzzle loader gun which he fired at him but he missed and started running away,” Mr Njase said
He said the complainant together with his son gave chase and they noticed that the shooter was in the company of his older brother Kedrick Simbule and his young brother Aaron Simbule who were also armed with big sticks.
Mr Njase said the complainant failed to apprehend any of his attackers but managed to identify and reported them to police.
The Police Commissioner said the victim told police that his three nephews were suspecting him to be a wizard, following the death of their brother David Simbule who died on October 19 last year after a short illness. He said that led the aggrieved brothers to call a witch finder who is believed to have told them that their uncle was the one bewitched their brother.
He said the three suspects have since been apprehended and would appear in court soon.
In another development police in Mafinga have arrested a 28 year old man for unlawful possession of a firearm. Mr Njase named the suspect as Aaron Musongole of Muyeleka village in Chief Mweniwisi’s area who was found with
a homemade pistol with one round of ammunition after villagers searched him.
He said the suspect was summoned by village council over a K350 he was owing a fellow villager Soldier Sichone aged 28 of Muyeleka Village.
