FOUR people have perished, while 11 sustained serious injuries in a road accident involving a motor vehicle Fuso Mistubish Truck registration number ALZ 6962 at Kasusu area 22 kilometres east of Nyimba district on Great East Road.

The truck carrying 38 passengers on board and 50 by 70kg bags of assorted goods was being driven by Mackriel Mumba aged 37 of Tasala 5 compound in Petauke district.

According to Police public relations officer Esther Katongo, the accident happened when the driver was ascending a hill in the process the propeller shaft broke due to overloading and the vehicle rolled backwards leading to the driver losing control and overturned.

“The following passengers died on the spot:  (1) f/ adult stellar other names not yet known of tasala 10 compound, Petauke (2) f/adult Neria Mvula of Mpunga compound, Petauke, (3) f/Janet Mwale aged 32 of Tasala 9 Petauke  (4)f/adult Stella Kabijani aged 38yrs  died at the hospital,” Ms Katongo said.

She said all the dead bodies were lying in Nyimba District Hospital mortuary while the seriously injured are admitted to the same health institution.

Ms Katongo said 16 other passengers sustained slight injuries and were treated as out patients.

She said the driver and the other seven passengers escaped unhurt.
