ANDREW MUKOMA writes
PEMBA District Commissioner, Reginald Mugoba, has expressed happiness with the pace at which some farmers in the district are depositing their K400 towards the FISP program.
Mr Mugoba told the Sun in an interview about 80 per cent of the farmers in Pemba District have so far deposited their money.
Mr Mugoba said out of the 8, 900 farmers listed as beneficiaries, about 7, 000 have already made their deposits.
“So far so good, I can safely say that out of the 8, 900 farmers who are beneficiaries of the FISP program in Pemba District, about 7, 000 had made their deposits by last week…this translates to about 80 per cent,” he said.
Mr Mugoba said, “For Pemba District and with the extension that government has put in place, all the farmers in the district will be able to make their deposits by the end of the extension period.”
He expressed happiness that government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, listened to the cries of the farmers for extension of the period.
“You know this government, under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu, is a listening government and we listened to the cry of the people and an extension was made,” said the District Commissioner.
And Mr Mugoba has advised agro-dealers not to withhold inputs on account that the responsible ministry was still owing them.
He said much as they were in business as dealers, they should also put into consideration the welfare of farmers.
