FARMERS in Katete have come under fierce attack from armyworms which have invaded the district and are destroying crops in their field.
To worsen their situation, the farmers are reported to be killing the pests with their bare hands due to lack of pesticides.
Headman Kalinde, Adrian Banda said the armyworms were increasing in number in the maize fields and destroying crops while farmers had not received any chemicals from government to get rid of the insects.
In an interview with the Sun, Headman Kalinde said they had resorted to killing them with their bare hands while they waited for government to come to their aid with chemicals.
Headman Kalinde also complained that many farmers had not received fertilizer during the 2019-2020 farming season in Chief Kawaza’s area and that some farmers only received three bags instead of eight.
He said that he was one of the farmers who only received three bags of fertilizer instead of eight.
Headman Kalinde said farmers had tried to ask agro dealers when the next consignment would come but they were not sure.
He said farmers were worried because if they did not receive fertilizer their crops would be destroyed and hunger would be in the village.
