AN ATTEMPT to extract mercury from a rocket propelled grenade ended in tragedy, leaving one man dead, and others injured in North western province.
Police have confirmed that the men acquired the grenade from Angola and later attempted to extract the mercury leading to an explosion that killed Seulu Lifuta, 63 of Mfwela village Ikelenge.
Three of the men have been arrested and detained at the district police station while two were on the run.
The incident occurred on an unknown date but when an attempt to extract mercury, an important factor in nuclear bombs or for building of boosted fission weapons went wrong and exploded as they tried to open one.
Provincial chief of police Hudson Namachila identified the suspects as Gift Muhemba, 32 of Kasenseli village, Greham Chisanda, 39 of Masitaki village and Kaunda Chinyemba, 30 of Lundungu village in Mwinilunga district.
He said after a report of a grenade exploding, police visited the scene and the body of Seulu Lifuta, 63 of Mfwela village Ikelenge district was found mutilated and later buried.
“I can confirm that three suspects, two from Ikelenge district and one from Mwinilunga district have been apprehended at Ikelenge police station in connection with the rocket launcher case,” he said.
“During interrogation the suspects revealed that they buried one grenade while the other one was kept by the wife to the deceased and two men are on the run,” he added.
Mr Namachila said efforts were being made to get bomb experts to recover the remaining explosives.
