MULENGA MUSONDA writes
IN THE quest to attend a funeral of his late mother, a man of Choma resorted to stealing three chickens to raise transport fare but instead he has been sent to Prison.
This is in a matter in which Feed Mudenda of Chief Mapanza’s Chiefdom was jailed for three months after he admitted breaking into a building and stealing the birds.
Particulars of the offence are that Mudenda on December 22 2019 broke into Mr Phenias Mukoga’s chicken run and stole three chickens valued at K110.
When matter came up for facts before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, Senior Public Prosecutor Charles Chinzai said Mudenda was seen fleeing with the birds around 02:00hrs by Mr Mukoga who raised alarm and the convict was later apprehended by the Neighbourhood Watch the following day.
Court: Have you understood the facts?
Court: Are they true and correct?
Court: Do you have anything you wish to add or subtract
Court: Upon your own admission of the facts to be true and correct, I hereby find you guilty and convict you accordingly.
Prosecutor: He is a first offender your honour
Despite informing the court that he looked after his family and the reason he stole was to raise transport money to attend his mother’s funeral, Magistrate Munukayumbwa jailed him to three months with hard labour as a deterrent measure to would-be offenders especially that such offences had become the order of the day.
