POLICE have arrested a suspect in connection with a spate robberies on the Nakonde District buffer zone, where fake money was used to lure victims.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Joel Njase said police apprehended the suspect after a combined operation.
He said a combined team of detectives both criminal investigations department (CID) and provincial intelligence office (PIO), led by the officer-in-charge, Mr Mubiana Mubiana made a follow up at Chiyanga Village after a tip off from a concerned member of the public.
“After Police investigations, the findings were that, the modus operandi in all these cases was the same. This is where a bunch of Counterfeit Notes was dropped in front of an unsuspecting trader, especially those identified by the said suspects as visitors,” he said.
He said the suspect is alleged to have robbed Zebron Kashiba, aged 63, of Zamtel Complex in Chief Mwamba of Kasama District.
He said the victim alleged that he was attacked and robbed of cash amounting to K 4,800 and an Itel cellphone valued at K 280 by a group of unknown male persons.
Mr Njase said the suspect is also alleged to have robbed Peter Musonda, on 22/01/2020 at around 06:00 hours at Chiyanga Village in Chieftainess Waitwika of Nakonde district, of cash money amounting to K11,230.
“The suspect also alleged to have robbed Gift Sosala 34 of Mpika District cash money amounting to K 2,100 and properties stolen is worth K 4, 600. Mr Sosala said he was beaten up by the suspects causing him serious bruises on the lower lip,” he said
The commissioner revealed that a bunch of counterfeit notes is used as a bait to persuade a trader to go to a secluded place to share the money after it is picked.
“The suspect has been identified by the three (3) complainants to be the person, who worked jointly with others unknown, to have robbed them.
