ABOUT 25,000 bags of relief mealie meal have been sent to Nkeyema District in Western Province by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to be distributed in all its seven wards.
District Administrative Officer, Patrick Mweemba, said Nkeyema district had continued to receive support from government and most wards which were affected by drought had benefitted from the relief mealie meal support programme. Speaking during the distribution of the mealie meal, Mr Mweemba said it was gratifying the rate at which government was responding to the needs of the district especially in areas which were affected by dry spells in the previous farming season.
And Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has been engaged under the Participatory Implementing Partner (PIP) to do the distribution in the district.
Meanwhile, ZRCS district president Arnold Ndunga confirmed the organisation had been engaged by government through the DMMU as a lead organisation in charge of distributing relief mealie meal in Nkeyema.
Mr Ndunga said nearly all the seven wards in the district had received their relief mealie meal despite the bad road network which had been a challenge during delivery of the relief package.
He however urged the beneficiaries not to sell the bags of relief mealie meal they had received. – ZANIS
