THE Lusaka Magistrate’s Court has jailed three men to 15 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 150 boxes of tiles worth K36, 000.
Before magistrate Martha Miti were Victor Mtonga, Owen Haamwalana and Bornface Mwiinga who admitted stealing the tiles on February 10.
The court heard that the three while acting together stole the tiles from Hong Chang Construction Company.
The three were apprehended and taken to the police station while in the process of selling the tiles.
Mtonga pleaded for mercy from the court because his wife and children would suffer if he was sent to prison.
Haamwalana asked for forgiveness and said he committed the offence because of group influence.
Mwiinga said he has learned a lesson not to steal people’s property.
Magistrates Miti said Mtonga, Haamwalana and Mwiinga wasted the courts time when they knew that they committed the offence.
She said prison is about rehabilitation and not punishment only.
“She said criminals must learn to admit and to tell the truth as lies would not be tolerated in court,” she said.
