A MAN who allegedly swindled a Lusaka man out of more than K23,000 by pretending to be a ZESCO employee has been sued .
Mike Mumba has told the Magistrates Court that he paid a man who pretended to be a ZESCO employee K11, 300 to connect electricity to his house but has not completed the work.
Before magistrate Felix Kaoma was Barry Hamoomba accused of obtaining K11, 300 between January 1 2019 and April 30 2019 from Mumba.
Mumba said in January 2019 when he visited his friend in Chalala he asked for a phone number of the person who installed electricity at his house.
He said he was given the number 0969999336 of a man he later came to know as Hamoomba.
Mr. Mumba said he called Hamoomba and made arrangements to inspect his house.
He said because he was busy, he asked Hamoomba to follow him at his office where he gave him his NRC and title deeds and transferred K9,000 to Hamoomba account using E-wallet and later gave him K2,300 cash.
Mumba said the payment was meant for ZESCO service charge, prepaid metres, poles and other items.
He said Hamoomba did not complete the works at his house and kept on giving excuses.
He said he thought Hamoomba was a Zesco employee and hesitated to report him to the police.
Hamoomba is alleged to have presented himself to Boniface Lungu as a ZESCO employee between January 1 and April 30 2019.
In the second count, Hamoomba allegedly obtained K4,700 from Lungu by falsely pretending that it was for connection of electricity.
In the third count, Hamoomba allegedly obtained K4, 700 from Frank Muma by falsely pretending that it was for connection of electricity.
In the fourth count, Hamoomba allegedly obtained K11,300 from Mike Mumba by falsely pretending that it was for connection of electricity .
In the fifth count, Hamoomba while acting with others unknown fraudulently did divert electricity power to the use of house number 2408/M/Sub F Ibex Hill without lawful authority.
In the sixth count, Hamoomba is alleged that while working other people unknown fraudulently divert power to the use of plot number 2408/M/Sub E Ibex Hill without lawful authority.
The matter comes up on February 5 for continued trial.
