THE Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has commended Sunbird Bio Energy Company for undertaking the cassava out-grower scheme in Kawambwa district, which will empower more 20, 000 small-scale farmers.
ZNFU president, Jervis Zimba said the cassava out-grower scheme was a good move which would provide an opportunity for farmers to diversify their crops.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka, Mr Zimba said the cassava project would help provide a readily available market for cassava farmers.
“My appeal to Sunbird is to reward the farmers handsomely,” he said.
And Small Scale Farmers for Development Agency (SAFADA) director, Boyd Moobwe said the introduction of the cassava out-grower scheme was a strategic move which should be rolled out to the other nine provinces so that more farmers could benefit.
He said that the project should be extended to other provinces since cassava can be grown even in drought prone areas.
Mr Moobwe encouraged farmers to venture more in cassava production to enhance national food security.
